If you attend Hoover High School like me, there are plenty of options for after school volunteering, community get-togethers, and activist groups. Here are many of my favorite accessible options and their regular meeting schedules:
Hoover Dynasty club: Offers community service and group activities with a focus on connection and international cultures. Meets once a month on Wednesdays.
BioBucs: Nationally ranked environmental science research and competition team focused on creating a tangible impact on the environment. Sign-ups are at the start of the year, but the club director, Janet Ort, can be contacted at jort@hoover.k12.al.us
Hoover YDSA: High school chapter of the Young Democratic Socialists of America that offers volunteer options, protest resources, and discussions about socialist ideology. Meets on most Wednesdays.
Hoover GSA: The Gender and Sexualities Alliance at Hoover High School is one of the less active clubs at the school, but could still serve as a safe space to relax and build community. They meet occasionally over the year.
- Email jkincaid@hoover.k12.al.us for more information, as GSA lacks their own website or social media to my knowledge
